Introduction to the Society

Codicote Local History Society exists to further the study of local and family history in the Codicote area, and to spread the knowledge of this subject. It welcomes members of any ability and interest within this topic.

The society was founded in 1980 and it now has about 60 full and about 25 corresponding members.

There is a programme of monthly talks and outings. The talks are on the second Tuesday in every month from September to May in the Peace Memorial Hall, High Street, Codicote, at 7.30 for 8 p.m. Outings take place in evenings in June and July at about the same time of the month, with an historical tour of a local site or settlement one Sunday afternoon in September in lieu of an August meeting. Details for the next few months are given in Events.

Other events include a walk around the parish boundary in the Spring, normally the first Bank Holiday Monday in May, and exhibitions in the Peace Memorial Hall in early Spring and at the Village Day in mid July. In even-numbered years the Spring exhibition takes the form of a Family History Day, where descendants of Codicote families from all over the UK meet up.

There are several research groups/working parties, including Family History, Transportees, Exhibitions, and Photographs. Other members are individually researching subjects such as Codicote in Wartime and Codicote Mediaeval Manorial Rolls with help from the society.

The society has a lending library, which members can borrow books from, and archives, composed of photocopies, microfilms, and microfiches of historic documents, which members can use.

The society has an on-going programme of Publications, and it produces two quarterly newsletters, “Codicote Families” and “The Codicote Historian”, which are available by postal subscription.

The society invites contact from anyone with connections with ancestors from the Codicote area, or its history generally. Corresponding membership is available to those who cannot attend monthly meetings, but who would like to receive copies of our newsletters.
